Mikumano Shrine Grand Festival
Saturday, October 4, 2025
The "Mikumano Shrine Grand Festival" colors spring in Enshu Yokosuka. In 2025 (Reiwa 7) it was held from April 4 to 6.
It is said that the festival originated when retainers of the Enshu Yokosuka domain lord brought the float styles and festival music of Edo's Tenka Matsuri to this area.
Highlights are the mikoshi (portable shrine) procession and the parade of 13 gorgeous "neri" floats that follows it.
The shout "Shita! Shita!" used when pulling the floats is said to be a corruption of "shita ni~ shita ni~," the call used during the daimyo's alternate-attendance processions.
