Morimachi Float: Honmachi, Suisaisha

Wednesday, September 10, 2025

One theory is that the name comes from the saying "where a spring wells up, water is the source." It is a bold and elegant float built in 1975 (Showa 50), which led the way in the movement to build new floats. • Metalwork by Yukio Murai (Kariya, Aichi) • The carvings beside the front blind inherit the old float's theme, "Susanoo-no-Mikoto slaying the eight-headed serpent" • The carving on the rear shirin is "the three wise monkeys," since the float was completed in the year of Kanoe-saru (Kōshin), the 57th in the sexagenary cycle Builder: Akio Ota (Honmachi) Carving: Takashi Shimura (second-generation Ryucho, Mikuni, Fukui) Painting: Kentaro Murakami (Hamamatsu); shoji screens and wheels: Kikuro Muramatsu (Minamimachi) Wheels: Toshio Muramatsu (Nakamachi) Calligraphy of the float name on the front blind: Hakuju Kuisako (from Honmachi, Morimachi)
